I am working as a sales representative for Bassett’s and accidentally drop a tray of samples in front of a client, mixing a number of different varieties of liquorice sweets together. Although Bertie is initially horrified, the client is delighted with the colourful, jumbled assortment, and so I invent liquorice allsorts.
Weston super Mare, 2026.
I finally succumb to pressures to make a website. I have been putting it off for a good twenty or more years, because I don’t know how to separate out all the various elements of what I do – I write plays; I direct plays; I work as a dramaturg; I teach acting, and writing, and directing; I use drama as a tool to teach other things entirely unrelated to the theatre; I work with professionals; I work with amateurs; I make work for, and with, people of all ages. And I always mix these elements up. No single project is any one of these things alone, and this is my strength. But how do you share this with someone who doesn’t know me? My website will only ever look like a tray of sweet samples, all jumbled up on the floor…
Those in the know encourage me to embrace this, and so here we are. What you are looking at now is one of those liquorice cylinders with the white fondant filling. To explore the site, close your eyes and take a pick from the bag held out in front of you. And, if you don’t like liquorice, other confectionary related metaphors are available.
